What are the various components of a rooftop solar system?

A rooftop solar PV system primarily comprises of solar PV modules (panels), inverters, and mounting structures. If battery backup is required, batteries and charge controllers would also be integrated with the system.

How much roof area do I require to install a rooftop solar PV system?

Every 1 kWp solar PV system requires 100-130 sq.ft. (about 12 sq.m.) of shadow free roof area at current crystalline panel efficiency level.

If my roof is shaded, does that make a difference?

Shade reduces the amount of electricity the solar PV system can produce. We design the system in a manner that the panels operate independently. So, if one panel is in shade during part of the day, the others still generate electricity. Our simulation software allows us to understand the shadow impact on your roof throughout the year. All we need is the roof plan and some photographs of the adjoining structures. With this information, we will design your system for maximum sun exposure. But sometimes a roof may be too shady to make solar feasible.

Will I get power during a power failure?

SolarSquare provides inverters that can use other sources of power other than the grid as a reference voltage and continue to function even when the grid is down.

How much electricity does a rooftop solar PV system generate?

The amount of electricity generated by a rooftop solar PV plant depends on the location, orientation and slope of the roof and ambient temperature. As a rule of thumb, a 1kW plant will generate between 3-5 kWh (units) of electricity in a day in India.

Is my building a good candidate for solar power?

In India, if you have a south facing roof with minimum shadow, YES, your building is a good candidate for installing solar PV plant. Additionally, if you are experiencing high or volatile energy costs, are using a lot of high-peak energy, are faced with clean energy mandates, or want to reduce your dependence on fossil fuels, you are probably a great candidate for our solar energy services.

What are the constraints in generating power from rooftop solar?

Some limiting factors are:

  • Solar power is generated only during the daytime.
  • The output of the solar plant varies as the sun moves across the sky,and as clouds move across the sun.
  • The Solar PV Plant needs to be synchronised with at least one of the three – grid, DG set, batteries, to generate power

How will my building look?

Your solar roof will look great! We work with our manufacturers to make our panels sleek and elegant. The frames are painted with automotive-grade paint, while our mounting structures blend them into your roof. We also make sure that wiring and other components are hidden from view.

What is the warranty on the solar panels?

Solar panels used by SolarSquare provide for 25-year performance warranty. All components of a Solar PV plant are operated and maintained free of cost by SolarSquare during the term of the partnership. We also provide a guarantee against generation shortfalls..

What are the approvals required for putting up a rooftop solar PV plant?

Typically, CEIG (Chief Electrical Inspector to Government) approval and approval from the nearest sub-station are the two approvals required for setting up a rooftop solar PV plant.

SolarSquare supports you through the entire approval process.

How much maintenance is required?

Solar PV systems generally require very little maintenance. Cleaning the panels with water once every two weeks to remove excessive dirt and debris is typically all that is needed. In addition, our online monitoring system provides a 48-hour response to any type of non-performance.

How much does a rooftop solar PV system cost?

A rooftop solar PV system without batteries costs ~Rs. 1,00,000/kWp (Kilowatt peak) including installation charges.

What are my options for financing a solar system?

You can always buy your solar system outright, either with your own money or by through debt. But with SolarSquare’s Zero-Capex solar solution, you pay only for the electricity generated and not for the asset. The benefits of the Zero-Capex model are explained in the How it Works section

Is solar power cheaper than diesel and grid power?

Yes, rooftop solar power is much cheaper than power from diesel generators. Solar PV generates power at a cost of about Rs. 7-8.5/unit while diesel generates power at about Rs. 14-20/unit.
For Industrial and Commercial users, solar power is cheaper than grid power in most states in India. For Residential users, the current grid tariffs are subsidized and hence, solar power might not be cheaper than the grid.
SolarSquare’s pricing model(s) provides the flexibility to save from going solar in all circumstances.

Is this the right time to enter into a long-term agreement for solar?

Solar prices have come down drastically with the recent advancement in technology. With solar tariff already lower than grid tariff, the earlier you start, the more you save. In addition, the government benefits on going solar today may not last forever, hence, going solar today will only ensure higher savings.

What if the plant does not perform as estimated?

The performance of the plant is monitored online. Upon intimidation of the issue, our instant response team will address to it on-site within 48 hours. The performance will be restored to the calculated figures within seven days of non-performance.

I have a manufacturing unit that operates for 9 months a year and is under maintenance for the remaining period.

The capacity of the plant will be decided keeping in mind the minimum consumption at any time of the term. We will ensure that the maximum power output by the solar PV plant at any point of time will always be consumed internally by the facility.

Additionally, the state governments are implementing the net-metering policy – which lets you sell the excess electricity generated to the state utility. Once this policy is implemented in your district, we will support you utilise the same for maximum benefits.

Will there be any damages to my roof? It already has some issues.

Our site survey team examines your roof for system installation. Once declared fit, we guarantee a hassle-free installation and operation. There will be no damage to your property.

What happens if my solar power provider winds up operations?

On any such occurrence, the client will assume full rights over the assets and enjoy solar power generation for its lifetime.

If I go for a Zero-Capex solution, how do I get charged for using solar power from my rooftop?

SolarSquare installs certified meters to measure the system generation. You will be charged on the power generated at a pre decided tariff.

What happens to the solar PV plant after the PPA is over?

The solar PV plant is transferred to the client at no-cost at the end of the PPA tenure.

What if my site is taken over/sold demolished or goes under refurbishment?

This is a natural possibility in case of any building / site. Keeping this in mind, SolarSquare provides an option to transfer the solar PV system to a new location upon request from the client.

What happens if there is a drastic change in the grid prices?

Typically, our tariff is pre decided and unaffected by grid pricing. But we may cap/peg our tariff to the grid if the client wishes. This will mean that the tariff will never go higher than the grid price.
